I started a fire in my dreams last night
It was only small; a few bits of twigs
and kindling. Portable. Somehow
I held it in my hands, carried it
with me (inside and out)
I thought it had gone out, but there
was still a trail of lingering
smoke in the air
My breath fed the fire—
flames grew
I was scared the fire would spread
my wild all over; that licks would
catch still things, hungry for
the animating force
to move them
To feel alive
Bright
I feared the destruction
but all I got was its
warmth
and glow
and life
